SYNTHETIC PINS ON THE LANES
Date: ca. 1960s
The Magna-Pin was the first synthetic bowling pin to be approved by the American Bowling Congress (ABC). These pins had a magnesium shell, a foam filling and were coated with plastic, making them quite durable and well-suited to survive constant pummeling. The ABC approved the pins for tournament use in 1962. Unfortunately, the production costs were high while the need for replacements was low, making the production of the Magna-Pin financially unfeasible, and Magna Pin Corp. went out of business.
