STENTON MURAL
Date: ca. 1948
Proprietors at the Stenton Recreation Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, made sure bowlers paid heed to the foul line! The novelty mural which adorned the back of the lanes envisioned bowling’s evolution in human history. Instructive designs provided the numbers of the pins, so bowlers could more accurately detail what was needed for the spare, something that would have been especially important for hand scoring. The lanes annually hosted a bowling tournament in celebration of Anthracite Day, a nod to Pennsylvania’s long relationship with coal mining.
