ROUND FIRST FOR THE STRIKE
Date: June 1961
Derks Field, a baseball field in Salt Lake City, Utah, was temporarily transformed into a bowling alley for a 1961 outdoor tournament. A joint effort of the Salt Lake City Tribune and the Utah Bowling Proprietors Association, the free tournament was the first time in history that automatic pinsetters had been up and running outside. Brunswick Corporation provided the equipment, and spectators filled the bleachers hoping to see a home run…or a strike.
