ELVIRA ON THE LANES
Elvira Toepfer (right) became a celebrated figure in Detroit’s bowling scene, earning the title of Motor City’s Queen of Bowling a remarkable eight times. This photo shows her during the 1952 All-Star Tournament, which featured 64 women bowlers. While she didn’t clinch victory in this specific tournament, her bowling career was nothing short of impressive. From 1942 to 2001, she participated in the Women’s Championships an astonishing 56 times, and she achieved notable top-five finishes in the World’s Invitational Tournament and the BPAA All-Star Tournament. Toepfer also made her mark on the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour during its early years. Her enduring legacy is a testament to her exceptional bowling prowess and unwavering dedication to the sport.
