CARTER’S 300
Date: undated
Don Carter was one of the first bowlers to forge a sustainable career in the sport. At a time when many professional bowlers had full-time jobs in addition to bowling, Don Carter brought in thousands of dollars in prize money — enough to constitute a “salary” of sorts. He became even more financially secure in 1964, when he became the first athlete in any sport to land a million-dollar endorsement deal. Commemorative pens such as these may have been an offshoot of the deal.
