BOWLING MAD IN ST. LOUIS
Date: 1911
St. Louis hosted the 11th annual American Bowling Congress tournament in 1911, and reports claimed the town “had gone bowling mad.” The normally baseball-crazy St. Louisans “have ceased conjectures as to the chances of the Browns and Cardinals, and are rooting for the tenpin game,” according to one journalist. The tournament, which ran during the depths of winter, saw more than 400 teams competing for about $30,000 in prizes.
